Mama’s kitchen

Peas with dumplings. It doesn’t sound like a very fancy dish, I suppose. However, it is my favorite for many years now. It is what my mama welcomes me with every time I come to visit my hometown. I live in Norway for several years now, and I enjoy it. However, I do miss my favorite people and mom’s cooking.

Plate

My eating habits were terrible while I was growing up. It was nobody’s fault but mine. I just insisted on eating sandwiches and chocolate, although my mom cooks wonderfully. Now you may think: “What kid doesn’t want to live on junk food?”. True. Only, I continued to eat like that even at the beginning of my 30s.
For some reason, peas with dumplings managed to break through that vicious circle of bad eating habits and to remain my favorite until today. Why? I have several theories. It’s deliciously creamy and enough amount of sweet. It’s always well cooked. You see, the older are peas, the longer dish will need to cook, but worry not. My mom will cook for hours to accomplish that “melting in your mouth” effect. It’s not just peas, mind you. It’s also those yummy dumplings. Mmmmm.

It's a kind of magic

It’s been a year and a half now since I visited my hometown. Our decision is not to travel until it’s 100% safe for our families and us. Lately, I’ve been thinking of asking my mom for a recipe. To give me a little flavor of home. To bring back memories of all of us sitting around the table, sharing a meal, and being happy to see each other in person again. Fingers crossed it will happen very soon again. Until then, I think I will try to cook it on my own. You can’t always wait for happier times. Sometimes you have to make them.
